The Sultan Palace of Yogyakarta or also known as Keraton of Yogyakarta is a palace complex located in the city of Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta Special Region, Indonesia. The palace is the main seat of Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family. It serves as a cultural center for the Javanese people and contains a museum that displays the sultanate's artifacts.Yogyakarta Palace was built by Prince Mangkubumi in 1755-1756 several months after the signing of the Treaty of Giyanti between Prince Mangkubumi of Yogyakarta, Hamengkubuwono of Surakarta and Dutch East India Company.

Prambanan or Rara Jonggrang (Javanese: translit. Rara Jonggrang) is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Central Java, Indonesia, dedicated to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) northeast of the city of Yogyakarta on the boundary between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces.

The temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia, and one of the biggest in Southeast Asia.


Kotagede (also Kota Gede, Javanese for "Big City") is a historic neighborhood in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The name was used for the administrative district (kecamatan) of the same name in the City of Yogyakarta, and previously a forest named Mentaok, to the east of Gajah Wong River. Kotagede contains the remains of the first capital of Mataram Sultanate, established in the 16th century. Some of the remains of the old Kotagede are remains of the palace, the royal cemetery, the royal mosque, and defensive walls and moats. Kotagede is well known internationally by its silver crafting.



Ullen Sentalu Museum is a private museum that was initiated by Haryono family and now is managed by Ulating Blencong Foundation. It was established in 1994 and officially inaugurated on March 1, 1997, coinciding with the date commemorated every year as a historical day for Yogyakarta City. The inauguration was done by KGPAA Paku Alam VIII, who was at that time the Governor of Yogyakarta Special Province.


Ratu Boko (Javanese: Ratu Baka) or Ratu Boko Palace is an archaeological site in Java. Ratu Boko is located on a plateau, about three kilometres south of Lara Jonggrang Prambanan temple complex in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The original name of this site is still unclear, however the local inhabitants named this site after King Boko, the legendary king mentioned in Loro Jonggrang folklore.In Javanese, Ratu Baka means "Stork King".

The site covers 16 hectares in two hamlets (Dawung and Sambireja) of the village of Bokoharjo and Prambanan, Sleman Regency.


Kampung Ketandan is a Chinatown area located in Malioboro, the center of Yogyakarta. Precisely located in the southeast of the intersection between Jalan Malioboro, Jalan Margo Mulyo, Jalan Pajeksan, and Jalan Suryatmajan. In Kampong Ketandan area there are many terraced houses with Chinese architecture, although it has started eroded modernization.

Jalan Malioborois a major shopping street in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The street is the centre of Yogyakarta's largest tourist district surrounded with many hotels, restaurants, and shops nearby. Sidewalks on both sides of the street are crowded with small stalls selling a variety of goods. In the evening several open-air street side restaurants, called lesehan, operate along the street. This is the street of the artists. Street musicians, painters, and other artists exhibit their creations on this road. There are several types of gudeg; dry, wet, Yogyakarta style, Solo style and East Javanese style. The most common gudeg comes from Yogyakarta, and is usually sweeter, drier and reddish in color because of the addition of teak leaves as coloring agent. Solo gudeg from the city of Surakarta is more watery and soupy. Gudeg is traditionally associated with Yogyakarta, and Yogyakarta is sometimes nicknamed "Kota Gudeg" (city of gudeg).

In Indonesia, it is also widely known as Bakpia Pathok, named after a suburb of Yogyakarta which specialises in the pastry. These sweet rolls are similar to bigger Indonesian pia, the only difference being the size.

The role of the Royal Festival is as a preserver of culture, customs and traditions of a kingdom. The word “Bedhaya” refers to female palace dancers, while “ketawang” is derived from “tawang” which means “the sky”, therefore Bedhaya Ketawang is said to be a dance from the sky. This Javanese dance is deemed sacred to the Mataram sultanates of both Surakarta and Yogyakarta. The dance from the sky can only be performed once a year at sultan coronation ceremonies. 

The two hour-long dance is comprised of three parts, each representing one stanza. every stanza is about story of King and Queen Love journey. The dance is very slow and sacred, therefore it is not shown other than in Keraton.

Imogiri (also Imagiri) is a royal graveyard complex in Yogyakarta, in south-central Java, Indonesia, as well as a modern village located near the graveyard in Bantul Regency. Imogiri is a traditional resting place for the royalty of central Java, including many rulers of the Sultanate of Mataram and of the current houses of Surakarta and Yogyakarta Sultanate. The name Imagiri is derived from Sanskrit Himagiri, which means 'mountain of snow'. The latter is another name for Himalaya.

The Royal Graveyard that preceded was Kota Gede. The graveyard was constructed by Sultan Agung of Mataram in the later years of his reign, probably in the 1640s. Do try climb the stairs and count them!

Tugu Yogyakarta is a monument that is often used as a symbol of Yogyakarta. This monument was built by the Dutch government after the previous monument collapsed due to the earthquake that occurred at that time. The previous monument named Tugu Golong-Gilig was built by Hamengkubuwana I, the founder of the Yogyakarta palace. Siung Beach is rich in the huge coral reefs. There are 250 routes for climbing the cliff in the area and you can find the proper sites to enjoy the beach panorama. There is also siung wanara coral reef from which the name of the beach originates. The distance is around 70 kilometer from the center of Yogyakarta city or 2 hours drive. Since it is difficult to get public transportation to go the beach, it would be easier if you travel with your own vehicle. And you are going to go through challenging road with climbs, sharp bending and sometimes slopes under the hot sun limestone hills and vegetable fields. You will have to overcome all the hindrances until you get to the beach.


Glagah beach is located about 40 km southwest of Yogyakarta exactly in Kulon Progo district. On all sides running Serang river which shaded green and overgrown with palm trees. This place is ideal for camping or just relaxing.

Glagah beach is about 1.5 kilometers from the coast Congot, Kulon Progo Regency, which both have been associated with a paved road. Sightseeing Glagah beach attraction is a big wave, a long coastline, cool air and clean water.


Slili beach is located precisely in the Village Sidoharjo, District Tepus, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Wohkudu beach is one of the many beaches in the southern sea cluster of Yogyakarta which is still not much touched by tourists. Its hidden location lies between the crush of two coral hills making Wohkudu Beach does not have a vast expanse of sand. Imogiri - Panggang line which is the closest route to reach Wohkudu Beach from Yogyakarta is also a lonely path because it is not the main line to reach Gunungkidul.
